Understanding the art of metal casting.

I started by studying the different styles of metal casting, different traditional crafts that use metal casting, it's scope etc.
Then, taking inspiration from nature and organic shapes, I replicated the desired pattern using sun-board to understand positive and negative spaces.
Moulds for casting were made using sun-boards of 5mm thickness. 4 moulds of the same pattern but different sizes were made to achieve the design in mind. These were then taken to the metal casting factory and casted in aluminium.
The centre structure of the stand was made using teak wood and the lathe to obtain the desired shape. They were made in three different parts for easy assembly. The wooden components were also sanded, stained and polished to provide a finished look.
The components were fitted together using screws.
The product can be used as a decorative item by itself or to keep small items on it such as lamps, candles etc.
All materials used were recycled materials.
